Pelican pictures from South Africa. These large birds that resemble animals from pre-historic times are magnificent. There are only eight species of pelicans and two of those are declared endangered.
As they are large birds they are very impressive in flight.
They have large beaks that are used for eating. They fill them with sea water - around 20 litres. Then they strain the liquid and are left with fish and sea creatures to eat.
They live for 12-14 years
These pictures of pelicans show them as sociable creatures. This is supported as they live in colonies.
Notice the pelicans standing in an ordered formation in the next two photographs.
